
Sir Eric Evans

This sculpture pays tribute to an inspirational sportsman and local hero, Eric Evans MBE 1921-1991. Eric captained England for 13 international appearances, leading his team to win many victories from 1956-1958. Aldwinians Rugby Union Football Club was Eric’s first club, where he played an important role for many years and was elected president from 1960-1966.The sculpture shows his strength, skill and drive.
It was unveiled by Tameside council leader Roy Oldham who was joined by members of Eric’s family including his grandson Joel Knotman, eight, former England team-mate Desmond Pasture, 94, and promising young players.
Councillor Oldham said: “We are always very keen to celebrate the people and events that have helped to shape Tameside’s history.
“Eric Evans was a local sportsman who went on to achieve international glory.
“We hope the statue will ensure he continues to inspire people for generations to come.”
As a teenager, Droylsden-born Eric joined Old Aldwinians before the club closed for a time when the Second World War broke out.
