The Sankeys Corner Art Miner Project ‘SCAMP’ – Miner & Pit Pony
Location: Sankeys Corner, Burntwood, Staffordshire
Saturday 8th June 2013 saw the unveiling of the Burntwood Mining Memorial. The first ever sculpture to be made for the town of Burntwood. Designed as a statue of a miner and pit pony – the 7ft bronze work now takes centre stage in the town.
“It has given the town a heart”, said Cllr Ron Bradbury
A new plaque upon which are written the names of 79 local miners was added to the Sankeys Corner Miner and Pony statue on the 1st December 2014. The special day of commemoration involved a family fun day for all the people of Burntwood to attend and local schoolchildren worked with the artist to pay tribute on the day.
The unveiling of the plaque was followed by a formal blessing and prayer in memory of those whose lives were given in the mining industry and then Carols were sung by children from Chase Terrace Primary School and Ridgeway Primary School
