The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect

This interactive artwork is called ‘The Butterfly Effect’, the concept that small causes can have large effects.

The name, coined by mathematician and meteorologist Edward Lorenz in the 1960s, is derived from the example that a tornado could be caused by as minor a perturbation as the flapping of the wings of a distant butterfly several weeks earlier. On each paper butterfly viewers help to create the artwork by writing a message pledging one small change they could make in their life.

The artist looks at how taken together, combined small personal changes could have a profound effect.
